BACKGROUND: Aerial dogfights, strafing, and bombing had little impact on the ground war in World War I. One aspect of the air war that did have an effect was aerial observation. Observers in airplanes and balloons communicated enemy positions to artillery batteries that then opened up on the otherwise unseen targets. Observation balloons tethered to the ground were especially vulnerable to attack by enemy aircraft because they were stationary and filled with highly flammable hydrogen. However, these observation balloons were usually protected by a concentration of anti-aircraft guns below. So some of the most intense and dangerous aerial activity of the war swarmed around these large behemoths in the sky. Some aces specialized as “balloon busters”, and many other pilots met their doom tangling with them.

SIZE: Drawing is 3.5" x 5.5". Professionally mounted in acid-free matting in a museum quality Nielsen black aluminum security frame (9" x 10") under UV glass that filters out 98% of untraviolet light.

SOURCE: This original WWI art is from my private collection and was displayed as part of WWHAM's "Brushes With War" exhibit of original art by the Troops of World War I from 2011-2014. In 2018 it was presented as part of the "Brushes WIth War" exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland. It is also featured in the WWI art book, "Brushes With War: Paintings and Drawings by the Troops of World War I" by Joel R. Parkinson (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 2014). The World War History & Art Museum (WWHAM) in Alliance, Ohio and its collection are privately owned. WWHAM closed to the public in April 2014 so the Brushes With War art collection could travel to other museums. Now that tour is complete and I am downsizing by selling off a small fraction of my art collection.
